The Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) announced Monday it will impose mandatory water conservation measures beginning Monday, July 15, 2002.
Due to ongoing drought conditions impacting the Cape Fear River Basin region, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) has asked our community’s cooperation in implementing mandatory water restrictions until the water crisis is resolved.

“We understand the importance of ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water for our community and want to cooperate with the State’s requests for these restrictions,” said Steve Blanchard, PWC General Manager. “ We hope these measures will help reduce the use of water until the levels at Jordan Lake have returned to normal. We ask for our customers’ cooperation to help prevent more drastic conservation measures in the future.”

The Cape Fear River is the City of Fayetteville’s primary source of water. Releases from the Jordan Lake into the Cape Fear River Basin provide for healthy and plentiful water conditions in the river.

The following mandatory guidelines apply to water customers on the PWC system throughout Cumberland County and a small portion of Hoke County:

  • PWC requests that customers limit outdoor water use to water only when and where necessary. If outdoor watering is necessary PWC customers are required to use the Odd/Even alternate day watering schedule to water lawns, grass, shrubbery, trees, and flower or vegetable gardens. If your street address ends in an odd number such watering may only be done on odd-numbered calendar days. If your address ends in an even number such watering may only be done on even-numbered calendar days.
  • Washing vehicles or any other type of mobile equipment is permitted only at commercial car wash facilities.
  • Use of water to wash down outside areas such as streets, driveways, service station aprons, parking lots, office buildings, exteriors of existing or newly constructed homes or apartments, sidewalks, or patios, or to use water for other similar purposes is prohibited.
  • It is unlawful to introduce water into any ornamental fountain pool or pond or other structure making similar use of water.
  • It is unlawful to use water from public or private fire hydrants for any purpose other than fire suppression or other public emergency or water department need.
  • It is unlawful to use treated water for dust control or compaction.
  • It is unlawful to intentionally waste treated water.

Compliance with the Water Restrictions is mandatory of all PWC customers and failure to comply can result in civil penalties up to $1000 per violation and potential termination of water services.
