In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in Cumberland County. On Sunday, February 9, 2003 at 12:30 a.m. the Public Works Commission of the City of Fayetteville had a wastewater spill at the Cross Creek Water Reclamation facility. The spill of secondary (partially treated) wastewater was the result of equipment failure in the aeration system. A pressure relief valve failed to seal allowing the spill to occur from a damaged manhole. The overflow was stopped within 3 hours and spilled 4,500 gallons into the Cross Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin. The aeration basin where the equipment failure occurred was removed from service to make repairs and prevent further discharge. Appropriate measures were then taken by PWC to clean and treat the affected area. The Division of Water Quality was notified of the event.
