Don't miss the
2nd Annual Big Cross Creek Cardboard Regattas on May 6th at the Cape Fear
Botanical Garden. This fun and exciting race allows you to showcase your
creative side by building a floating boat out of recyclable materials.
You and other
contestants will race your homemade boat down the Big Cross Creek that
flows past the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. There are 3 categories to choose
from, click each to see official rules:
Boat inspections
and judging will begin at noon. The regatta parade down to the Big Cross
Creek starts at 1:45 and race is set for 2:00. Judges will name winners
for these awards*:
- Big Cross
Creek Award - Given to the Champion adult entry.
- Little
Cross Creek Award - Given to the Champion youth entry.
- Crows
Nest Award - Given to the Champion Family entry.
- Cruise
Line Award - Given to the Champion Corporate entry.
- Titanic
Award - Given to the entry with the most spectacular sinking. (to be
eligible entrants must fully salvage their vessel).
- Captain's
Ball Award - Given for the best dressed entry.
- Dry Dock
Award - Given to the best looking entry before launch.
- Engineer's
Award - Judge's Choice
Anyone can
enter
.. as long as you pay the $5 entry fee and complete the registration
form and a liability
form. The design is up to you! Remember to use your imagination and
be as creative as you can.
This event
is sponsored by the Watershed Action Team, the Cumberland Soil & Water
Conservation District, the CFBG, and the Fayetteville Elks Lodge #1081.

*All decisions
by judges are final. Awards will only be given out if there are qualifying
entries.

Big
Cross Cardboard Regatta Official Rules
Individual/team
will design and build a cardboard boat and bring it to the Regatta.
- Only corrugated
cardboard may be used. It can be of any thickness but must not be bonded
to any other material such as vinyl. No material such as wood, Styrofoam,
or rubber.
- Regular
oars can be used and all participants must wear personal flotation devices
and shoes.
Hulls may be painted but they may not be covered in plastic, duct tape,
or anything else (although duct tape may be used for joints). Joints
and seams may be glued or taped. Tar based substances like roof coating
are not permitted.
- The design
is left to the builder. We encourage you to use your imagination. We
would love to see a boat that represents the camaraderie of your group.

Mayday
Cardboard Boat Building
Individual/team
will build a cardboard boat ON-SITE, using the materials provided by the
Watershed Action Team. Teams
must be on-site and ready to begin building at 10:00 am.
- Teams
have two hours to build their boat from the materials provided on-site.
- Boats
must be constructed from only the materials provided.
- Teams
must construct their own paddles/oars.
- All participants
must wear personal flotation devices and shoes.
- The design
is left to the builder. We encourage you to use your imagination. We
would love to see a boat that represents the camaraderie of your group.

Litter
Free Watershed Recycled Boat
Individual/team
will construct a boat made entirely of recycled materials.
- Boats
must be constructed from recyled materials from your group's homes or
business that are contaminant free, i.e. if you use a 5 gallon bucket
that had floor wax in it, it must be cleaned out.
- Boat can
be held together with the use of these non-recycled items: duct tape,
twine, rope, string, fishing line, no wire, or zip ties.
- Teams
must construct their own paddles/oars.
- All participants
must wear personal flotation devices and shoes.
- The design
is left to the builder. We encourage you to use your imagination. We
would love to see a boat that represents the camaraderie of your group.
