NC Representative Rick Glazier announced August 16 that the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF) has approved a $2.647 million grant to help protect water quality in Cumberland County.

The CWMTF Board of Trustees approved the request from PWC at its August 14 meeting. The funds will help reduce and treat storm water runoff in the Cross Creek water supply watershed.

“Specifically, this grant will allow PWC to construct wetland areas and storm water retention ponds to help prevent pollution from running into Glenville Lake,” said Rep. Glazier. “That will help keep drinking water clean for the City of Fayetteville.” Glenville Lake provides about 25 percent of Fayetteville’s drinking water.

“We are pleased that the Clean Water Management Trust Fund has recognized the significance of this project and will help PWC reduce storm water run-off,” said PWC Commission Chairman, Luis Olivera.

“Glenville Lake is a primary source of Fayetteville's drinking water,” said Chad Ham, PWC Water Resources Environmental Programs Manager. “Funding for this project will help the PWC protect this valuable resource and ensure Fayetteville residents continue to receive safe drinking water."

A total of $58.3 million in water quality grants were awarded statewide by CWMTF trustees this month. They were made possible through a $100 million appropriation by the North Carolina General Assembly earlier this year.

The CWMTF was established in 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits.
