Generation | FAQ PWC's Electric Systems Division is responsible for the electric system facilities, operations and performance including generation, transmission, and distribution of power. This division is also responsible for the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the generation plant and distribution plant facilities. Two departments within the Electric Systems Division are Electric Construction & Maintenance and Substations. Electric Construction performs utility construction, system operations, line clearance (tree trimming), and fiber optic installation and maintenance services for PWC's Distribution and Transmission Systems. This department is responsible for the routine maintenance and emergency response to over 72,000 customers. It also maintains 1,455 miles of overhead distribution, 662 miles of underground distribution, 121 miles of overhead transmission circuits, and approximately 200 miles of fiber optic cable. Substations is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of PWC's 33 transmission to distribution substations, three point of delivery transmission substations, and 15 large industrical/commercial substations. This department also maintains the generator step up transformers and associated high voltage protective equipment at PWC's Butler-Warner Generation Plant. It installs and maintains all Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System substation interaces, including remote terminal units, equipment remote controls, and alarm status devices. Additionally, Substations calibrates and tests transmission and distribution system protective relaying systems. Line Clearance (Tree Trimming)At PWC, we know the citizens of Fayetteville and the surrounding areas are proud of their urban forests. We also know that power outages are an inconvenience to our customers. But when trees compete with overhead power lines, the outcome could be "shocking" - especially in the case of downed power lines associated with overgrown or fallen trees. Line Clearance / Vegetation Management is an essential part of power line maintenance at PWC to ensure safe, reliable electrical service. Within this department, we prune or remove trees (undesired vegetation) from right-of-ways of overhead power lines for safe conductor to tree clearances. PWC routinely (every 3 to 5 years) surveys, plans, and performs the maintenance work necessary to clear the power lines. Presently, this maintenance work is performed on a three-year rotation. If your tree problem involves interference with water and/or sewer lines, please contact the PWC Water Resources Construction Department at (910) 223-4716. If it is located on watershed property, please contact the PWC Watersheds Department at (910) 223-4760. Surveying
and Planning Our work is concentrated mostly on clearing transmission and distribution circuits. Most secondary and service drop lines are insulated and do not require maintenance unless a limb is putting substantial pressure on the line, thus causing the insulation to be rubbed off the wire. PWC does not remove trees along secondary or service drop lines. The Line Clearance crews trim trees that are a hazard to overhead power lines or that obstruct the illumination of streetlights. Using the latest in Arboriculture techniques, the crews achieve the needed clearance until the next scheduled trimming rotation. The adequate clearance is determined on a tree-by-tree basis, referencing the tree species, layout of the land, location of the tree, and the power line itself. If the problem you are experiencing with a tree does not fall under these trimming guidelines, it is the responsibility of the customer to contact a private contractor to perform the work.
