Electric Customers Asked to Conserve

August 8, 2007

At the request of Progress Energy, PWC is asking all electric customers to conserve energy as record-high temperatures and electricity usage is projected for Wednesday afternoon.

Customers are asked to reduce non-essential use of electricity for the next 48 hours or until the 100 degree temperatures subside.

Fayetteville is Progress Energy’s largest wholesale electric customer in North Carolina. Progress Energy’s facilities have the capacity to meet the anticipated load but are taking precautions in the event of an untimely equipment failure.

PWC’s historical peak electricity use is 474 MWh (megawatt hours) and was set in July 27, 2005. PWC ‘s usage Tuesday was 449.3 MWh. If a new peak is reached on the PWC system today, it is not anticipated until early evening.

Suggestions for reducing electricity use:

-Set air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher
-Avoid use of washing machines, dryers and dishwashers and other home appliances through the early evening hours.
-Turn off unused room lights, computers, and other appliances.
-Close blinds and drapes to cut down on heat from the sun.
