Commissioner Evelyn O. Shaw, Treasurer

Evelyn O. Shaw is currently serving as Treasurer in her first term on the PWC board after being appointed on September 14, 2015. As Chair during 2016-17, Shaw held the distinction as being the first African-American woman to serve in both positions since the inception of the Public Works Commission in 1905.

An active member of the community, Shaw has served with many organizations in Fayetteville and throughout the Southeast.  She has previously served on Fayetteville State University’s Capital Campaign and is a past Director of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the School of Business at Alabama State University. She was appointed by former Governor Jim Hunt to serve on the Board of Trustees at North Carolina Central University and served as Vice-Chairman for two years during her 8 year tenure.

Shaw has received the US Small Business Administrator’s Award for Small Business Excellence in Management and served as Chairperson of the Cumberland County Area Mental Health Board for four years during her tenure. Shaw was the first African-American and first female to serve as the Director of International Students at Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas working with over 10 consulates in the United States.

She is a previous Chairperson of the Cape Fear Regional Bureau for Community Action, is a past board member of the Fayetteville Arts Council and is a past member of the Fayetteville Area Chamber of Commerce. She is a current member of the national organization AMAC (Airport Minority Association of Concessionaires) and is an active member of The Fayetteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. She is an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Fayetteville and has served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 20 years and is a member of the Confirmation Ministry Team.

Shaw has been an entrepreneur since 1974 and has served as president of a family business, Shaw Foods, since 1995. She is a 1967 graduate of the (Dallas County) Selma, Alabama Public School System, and holds a B.S. degree in English from Alabama State University, a MEd. in Counseling from Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama and certification from the Executive Management Program at Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. Shaw and her husband, Larry, have two sons and two grandchildren.
