PWC Lifts Stage 1 Voluntary Water Conservation Measures

Fayetteville, N.C. – The Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) has lifted Stage 1 (Alert) of the City of Fayetteville’s Water Shortage Response Ordinance, effective immediately, following recent rainfall and improved conditions in the Cape Fear River Basin. 

Stage 1 voluntary conservation measures were activated on July 6, 2026, in response to regional drought conditions and declining water levels in the Cape Fear River Basin. The voluntary measures asked customers to reduce non-essential water use to help protect the community’s water supply for drinking, sanitation, and fire protection. 

Recent rainfall across the region has improved water supply conditions, and the Cape Fear River Basin levels have stabilized sufficiently to allow PWC to lift voluntary conservation measures. 

“We appreciate PWC customers and the larger community for their conservation efforts during the Stage 1 Alert,” said Timothy Bryant, CEO/General Manager of Fayetteville PWC. “With the recent rainfall and improved Cape Fear River Basin conditions, we are able to lift the voluntary measures while continuing to closely monitor the regions water supply.” 

Customers may resume normal water use. PWC encourages customers to continue using water efficiently as part of their everyday practices and reminds customers that PWC’s established watering schedules remain in effect year-round, regardless of the Water Shortage Response stage. 

PWC will continue monitoring Cape Fear River Basin levels, weather conditions, and other factors affecting the community’s water supply and will provide updates if conditions change.
