ENERGY STAR® Window-Unit A/C Incentive Program

Window A/C units can offer an affordable, flexible way to cool specific rooms, helping customers stay comfortable without the higher price tag of a whole-home cooling system. For many homeowners and renters, a window A/C unit may ultimately be the most practical cooling option available due to cost or other circumstances outside of their control.

Over time, units become less efficient; older equipment often uses more electricity, struggles to maintain consistent comfort, and may work harder during hot summer weather, which can lead to higher energy bills. Owners and renters may continue using these older units because replacing them can feel expensive or unnecessary, especially if the unit still turns on and cools the room.

If you have an older, inefficient window A/C unit or if you’re looking to install a new high-efficiency unit for the first time, this incentive program can help make that upgrade more affordable! You can increase your home’s comfort and reduce energy use with an ENERGY STAR® window‑unit air conditioner — and receive a $75 bill credit for participating.

Why ENERGY STAR®?

ENERGY STAR® window A/C units are designed to:

  • Use less electricity
  • Cool more efficiently
  • Reduce peak‑time energy demand
  • Improve comfort in small and medium‑sized spaces

Match Your Room to the Right A/C

Choosing an ENERGY STAR® unit that is properly sized for the room can feel a little overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. A unit that is too small may run constantly and struggle to cool the room, while a unit that is too large can cool too quickly without properly removing humidity, leaving the space feeling damp or uncomfortable.

If you have a standard room, you can figure out your unit size in two easy steps. Start by measuring out the space you want to cool and calculate the square footage and then use chart below to match your room size with the corresponding cooling capacity.

Sometimes there are additional factors to consider and you may need to adjust your size selection. If the room has a tall ceiling, receives direct sunlight, or if you’re planning to use the unit in a kitchen or other warm area, you’ll need to take these details into account and upsize. On the other hand, shady rooms can handle slightly smaller units compared to the average.

Better Cooling Starts with a Better Seal

Proper installation is just as important as right sizing your unit when it comes to getting the best performance and energy savings from your ENERGY STAR® window A/C. Even a high-efficiency unit can waste energy if warm outdoor air leaks in around the sides, top, or bottom of the unit, or if cooled indoor air escapes through gaps around the window. Using the included weather stripping, securing the side panels tightly, and sealing any openings helps the unit cool more effectively, maintain comfort longer, reduce drafts and moisture concerns, and prevent the air conditioner from working harder than necessary.
