SMART Electric Water Heater Program
Water heating is one of the larger energy uses in many homes and businesses. A SMART electric water heater gives customers more control over when their water heater operates, especially during PWC’s Time-of-Use (TOU) peak hours when electricity costs more.
A qualifying SMART electric water heater can help customers schedule or manage hot water heating around Tine-of-Use peak hours, monitor usage through connected features, and improve awareness of household or business energy consumption.
To help customers manage electric use during peak periods, PWC offers a $150 bill credit for an approved electric, Wi-Fi connected SMART water heater. Eligible units must meet program requirements and applications must be submitted within six (6) months of purchase and installation.

SMART Electric Water Heater Program Frequently Asked Questions
Why is PWC offering the Smart Electric Water Heater Program?
PWC offers the SMART Electric Water Heater Program to help eligible customers better manage electric use under the Time-of-Use rate. Because TOU rates are higher during peak periods, a Wi-Fi connected electric water heater can help customers schedule water heating outside of peak hours when practical.
What are the peak Time-of-Use (TOU) hours?
PWC’s TOU rate provides lower-cost off-peak hours and higher-cost peak hours. Customers may be able to use the scheduling features of a SMART electric water heater to reduce or avoid water heating during peak hours, while still maintaining hot water availability based on their household or business needs. What are the benefits of a SMART electric water heater?
- Control Over Your Heating System: A SMART electric water heater provides connected features that may allow customers to monitor usage, adjust settings, and schedule water heating through an app or online controls. These features can make it easier to avoid unnecessary operation during peak TOU hours.
- There’s Safety in Smart Technology: Connected water heaters may include alerts or notifications that help customers identify potential operating issues, unusual usage, or other device-related concerns. Customers should always contact the manufacturer or device support for technical support, warranty questions, or operational issues.
- Give Your Smart Heater the Chance to Think: Some SMART water heaters can learn usage patterns or allow customers to create schedules based on when hot water is needed most. This can support comfort while helping reduce energy use during higher-cost times of day.
- Environmentally Friendly: By improving control over when water heating occurs, SMART electric water heaters can help customers make more efficient use of electricity and support efforts to reduce demand during peak periods.
- Take Charge of Your Heating Bill: The program provides a $150 bill credit for an approved qualifying unit. While savings can vary based on household or business usage, connected scheduling and monitoring features can help customers better understand and manage electric water heating costs.
