Fountainhead Spring Park

As part of the 2005 PWC Centennial Celebration, PWC began the creation of  Fountainhead Spring Park, a historical restoration project preserving Fayetteville’s history of Fountainhead Spring, one of Fayetteville’s original water sources.

Located on Fountainhead Lane in Fayetteville, water still flows into the former town ‘well’ from the hilltop spring.  The project restored the well and conducted an archeology study to document its historical significance.

In 2005, the area surrounding the spring was being developed into apartment condominiums and PWC acquired part of the spring site and the ‘well’ so that it could be preserved and incorporated into a small urban park alongside Fountainhead Lane.

In the spring of 2006, Wake Forest University archaeologists conducted a three-week investigation. The study provided information that helped aid the preservation and restoration of the spring and the nineteenth-century brick structure and resulted in the discovery of the remains of a massive 186-year old wooden reservoir that was not previously known to exist.

The restoration of the well and creation of the Fountainhead Spring Park was completed in 2008. Educational signage documents the sites significance in Fayetteville history and PWC provides annual maintenance for the park and well.
